The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
