Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
